Letters from future students

One who absolutely loved my class:

To Ms. Kim,

Thank you for being my math teacher. Thank you for making me feel belonged in the classroom and telling me that I could do it even when I was struggling. You helped me understand the concept very quickly and efficiently. I used to hate math but I was able to approach problems with a different perspective. I was engaged and motivated to study.

From. _______

One who didn't:

To Ms. Kim,

I wish you implemented more activities and games in class. It was challenging for me to focus during your lesson. Further, when I was given the rest of the class time to finish my homework, it was hard for me to solve the problems because I didn't understand. It felt like I was bombarded with questions and I didn't know where to start.

From. _______

My personal hope is that I can make the classroom fun and engaging. I want to help my students focus in class and give them motivation. I also want to be a teacher who can effectively teach concepts in mathematics. I don't want to be a teacher that reads off my notes word for word. I am worried that I may not be aware of students who are struggling. Further, I am worried that I may not be able to develop genuine relationships with my students. I want to be a teacher who knows how to keep boundaries but also cares for all my students at the same time.

  1. Good, Esther. Thoughtful reflections -- and then the next step is to think about how will you work to develop genuine and appropriate teacher-student relationships and engage your students with the concepts of mathematics. You can do it!
